Michael Würtz Overbeck
Formation Gallery
03 Oct 2025 – 15 Nov 2025
Formation Gallery is proud to present Michael Würtz Overbeck’s second solo exhibition at the gallery, IN THE BLIND SPOT OF THE SUN. The exhibition is a deeply personal investigation of depression, anxiety, vulnerability, and the longing for vitality – but at the same time also a search for joy, for self-love, and for the will to embrace life.
With this exhibition, Overbeck seeks to create a space for reflection, where darkness and fragility may become a springboard for recognition, beauty, and connection. Drawing upon his own experience as a catalyst, the artist invites the viewer into a world where pain and heaviness coexist with the hope of light and renewal.
The exhibition presents a series of new works in which Overbeck combines his meticulous pencil drawings with sculptural objects and installations. At the same time, he expands into new material and technical territories: photochemically developed masking, engraving on brass, magnetic stirring, and microscopically printed text are among the strategies that extend the works’ visual and sensory register.
A key work is the triptych IN THE INTERIM OF BIRTH AND DEATH (2023), consisting of three drawings circling around life’s outer limits: birth and death – and the banal, yet all-encompassing, life unfolding in between. On a concrete plinth, a frozen clock ticks in STOP ALL THE CLOCKS (2024), where time appears to stand still at the moment when life fractures and experiences change us forever.
The vulnerability and inner struggles of the self also come to the fore. In YOU WILL NEVER FULLY KNOW ME (2025), a fragmented self-portrait is reflected in mirrors, where only small glimpses of the artist’s face are revealed – an inquiry into what we reveal and what we conceal. With ANGST (2025) and DEPRESSION (2025), mental states that can paralyze and engulf are given raw and direct form. In contrast, works such as NOTE TO SELF (2025) offer an almost invisible reminder to oneself of the value of self-love and the courage to live.
The title IN THE BLIND SPOT OF THE SUN alludes to the nature of depression – the experience of being cut off from the sun’s light and life force. Yet the sun, represented in the work SUN (2025), is always present: an electro-etching on brass placed behind a dark rubber curtain in the gallery window, where it can be glimpsed as a symbol of hope that never entirely disappears.
With this exhibition, Michael Würtz Overbeck continues his persistent exploration of life’s fragility, while simultaneously opening new pathways into a material and existential investigation of the human condition.
